Edition 55 | September 2026

Hello Mountain Wine Club!
Fall has arrived, bringing the season of harvest and a new collection of exceptional
wines to explore. Your September shipment highlights the distinctive character of
Napa Valley’s mountain vineyards, offering a sense of place with every pour. These wines deliver a tasting experience as vibrant and invigorating as the season itself. This release features the 2023 Mt. Brave Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2023 La Jota Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, each awarded 98 points by Jonathan Cristaldi of Decanter.

Perched between 1,400 and 1,800 feet on the western slopes of Mt. Veeder, Mt. Brave Vineyard carries a rich heritage dating to 1841. This historic vineyard thrives in a challenging environment, where rocky, nutrient-poor soils and steep terrain push the vines to produce small, thick-skinned grapes packed with concentration and structure. Rising above the morning fog, the site benefits from
long, sun-drenched days tempered by cool mountain air, allowing the fruit to ripen
slowly and evenly.

The 2023 Mt. Brave Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon captures this mountain intensity with a striking balance of power and elegance.
Across the valley, Howell Mountain’s vineyards rise between 1,400 and 2,500 feet, where volcanic soils and abundant sunlight yield wines of compelling structure and intensity. Owing to its unique position, Howell Mountain benefits from cooling winds off San Pablo Bay that, upon meeting Mount Saint Helena, are funneled into the vineyards.

The 2023 La Jota Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon captures this moderated climate, revealing blackberry and cassis, layered with refined notes of toast, crushed rock minerality, and graphite. On the palate, the wine shows pleasing weight and texture, carrying through to an impressively persistent finish.

Together, these exceptional wines showcase two of Napa Valley’s most celebrated mountain appellations, each shaped by its own combination of elevation, soil, sunlight, and fog. We are thrilled to share them with you and invite you to savor the character and beauty of these remarkable mountain terroirs.

Peace,

98 POINTS

“There is so much refinement in this wine in 2023. It retains its characteristic power and intensity, yet the tannins are of such immense quality and precision that they gently support and glide the succulent dark fruit across the palate. Throughout, a deep ironstone mineral character shines clearly. On the back end, that expressiveness evolves into notes of loamy earth and wet slate, fuelled by a mix of dark berry fruit and finishing with a distinctly salted stone character that is wholly characteristic of this wine. Winemaker Chris Carpenter explains that La Jota’s wines tend to offer more generous, approachable tannins—making them ideal for restaurant lists. That accessibility, he notes, comes down to thoughtful decisions around clone, rootstock, and site selection (some of the vineyard blocks naturally yield softer, more inviting tannins, as opposed to dense, palate-etching structures; he seeks Cabernet Sauvignon expressions that are powerful and present, yet have a gentler texture). This blend was aged for 22 months in 73% new French oak.”

“ The idea behind this wine is that it is a mountain wine made for restaurants, and to that end, Chris Carpenter sources Cabernet Sauvignon from Mount Veeder. Building in the glass with youthful aromatics of ripe black and blue fruit layered with graphite and pressed wildflowers, underpinned by dark loamy earth, bright baking spice, and violet nuances. The tannins are velvety and iron-laced, yet noticeably softer in profile than those of the Lakoya Wines, carrying a cocoa-powder freshness and an ease that favours elegance over sheer mass. That elegance, or freshness factor, and approachable tannin make this a compelling wine for restaurant by-the-bottle programmes.”
